1. Membership & Eligibility

• Who can join the St. Yared Mutual Aid Society? 

* Membership is typically open to Ethiopians and Ethiopian-Americans residing in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area.

• Can I add my extended family to my plan?

     *  Most Edirs cover the primary member, spouse, and unmarried children under a certain age (e.g., 21 or 24). Parents often require a separate "Associate" membership.

2. Financials & Dues

• How much are the monthly/annual dues?

  • $ 30 per month.

• What happens if I miss a payment?

  • Usually, there is a grace period (30–90 days), after which a late fee is applied or membership is suspended.

• Is there an initiation fee for new members?

  • We charge a one-time "catch-up" fee or a flat registration fee to ensure equity with long-standing members.

3. Benefits & Claims

• What services does the Edir provide during a loss?

  • Financial payout for funeral expenses.

  • Coordination of "Lekeso" (mourning) logistics.

  • Provision of tents, chairs, or food service (if applicable).

• How do I file a claim?

  • Contact this person or complete the online form on this site. A death certificate or hospital notice is required.

How to Pay Your Dues

To ensure the sustainability of the Society and reduce administrative costs, we use a mandatory ACH Direct Debit system.

• When: Dues are automatically withdrawn from your bank account on the [e.g., 1st or 15th] of every month.

• One-Time Setup: You only need to complete the ACH Authorization Form once when you join.

How to Update Your Family Registry

1. Download the Member Update Form from our "Forms" page.

2. Fill in the details for new dependents (births, marriages).

3. Email the completed form to our [Contact Email].

How to Access the Bylaws

1. Click on the "Bylaws" link in the main menu.

2. Log in with your member credentials (if using a restricted SharePoint/Google Drive link).

3. The document is available for viewing and download in both Amharic and English.
